4G/5G/Cellular Internet

Generally there is no issue using any form of cellular internet, provided the bandwidth and speeds are sufficient to support the cameras on the connection. However something that needs to be confirmed prior to deployment if the cameras require Port Forwarding is that the SIM card being used is routable and is not using CGNAT (Carrier-Grade NAT). This type of connection generally makes Port Forwarding unusable due to the layers of IP addresses involved and how those IP addresses are shared among multiple customers.

Plug & Play cameras should be able to work with CGNAT however, so if a routable SIM is not available and CGNAT is the only connection available, these types of cameras can be used to support that deployment.

Starlink

Starlink generally uses CGNAT and as of June 2024 doesn't appear to provide an alternative. Therefore Plug & Play cameras would be required for a deployment on a Starlink connection.

Alternatives when CGNAT and Port Forward cameras must be used together

If Port Forward cameras are the only option, we do have a software solution that can be utilized to circumvent port forwarding. Please contact support@camcloud.com for more information on this solution. Note that it requires an onsite device that can run windows software packages.

There are other potential ways to make port forwarding work for devices on CGNAT, however these can be fairly technical or niche depending on the setup, so we aren't able to provide any specifics in this regard.
